Bias & Jewels Design Inspiration

Check out this GREAT necklace made from old rhinestone earrings and pins I found in a Martha Stewart magazine – THEN I noticed, the RAW edges on this charmeuse dress – undoubtedly silk as well. Look at the neckline finish – it’s just a strip of bias stitched on top of the raw neckline edge!  This is just one of those what I call “SNOOP SHOPPING photos in my Creative Sewing File of inspiration.  I have inspiration files not only for real (torn out pics), but also here on my computer AND, of course, on Pinterest.  Here’s my Pinterest Account…you might want to ‘follow’ me there as well as my blog. Look closer at this top.  It appears that there are extra wide double layers of bias that are stitched down the center of this dress.  These look to be about 3″ wide to me, but I intend to ‘play’ with the idea.  It looks like there are 4 of them.  If you look even more closely, you’ll see that the upper edges of these strips are not even caught in with the neckline finish.  Honestly, I think I would do these vertical strips first, and then I WOULD catch them underneath the final bias stitched on top at the neckline.  I think this embellishment would be AWESOME in crepe back satin – with those 2 surfaces ‘playing’ on a solid tone top.

I feature BIAS repeatedly in my ”REFINED EMBELLISHMENTS FOR CREATIVE CLOTHING” DVD. If your clothing needs a little push in the creative genre – you might want to consider adding it to your collection – especially since right now I’m including this DVD  FREE with any order through Feb. 28, 2017.

One of the techniques in that DVD, and seem to always have taught in my teaching/travels is this one that I learned from April Dunn, an Elna Educato, many many years ago.

I’ll ’embed’ it here, but if you like this How-To,  I’m pretty sure you’ll like the full DVD as well.  AND, I have a substantial gathering of more sewing tutorials at my YouTube Channel HERE .  Subscribe to my channel and you’ll know when I post any new ones.

There’s a story behind the DVD most mothers can identify with: This project took a week of shared days with my then 30 year old son…. and this is NOT his favorite area of interest nor pastime! We worked and worked and strained and strained to get along and make it as perfect as we could. THEN…as he is editing it – he calls MORTIFIED that he has discovered some intermittent static…from a source we surely didn’t hear: the TRIPOD! Besides that, you have no idea how many times we had to start over because the phone rang! Confident in the value of the material – and the quantity (a full 2 hours and 45 minutes!), I convinced him that the content was more important than the ‘polish’ and we went ahead with the printing instead of ‘enduring’ another fond memory-making week together to re-do it.

Back to the inspiration photo…. What do YOU think?  Do you like the bias detail?  How about that necklace?  Have you done anything like that with old jewelry?  I have my Mom’s old jewelry box in my Sewing Studio:  Think I’ll go take a peek……..
