Folkwear #109 Little Folks
"Long
before we had our little Isaac, I had seen Folkwear
pattern #109 'Little Folks" and thought it had some
adorable outfits for babies. When Isaac was
about 9 1/2 months old, I finally got around to
buying the pattern and some medium-weight striped
cotton fabric from Londa and started working on the
Moroccan Djellaba. It is sized for 2T or 4T
like about half of the other outfits in the pattern
it is big on our nearly 11 month old (the rest of
the outfits are only for newborn to 6 months).
I had to make a very deep hem and it still drags on
the floor so it will be put away until he is big
enough not to trip over it while walking.
The
Djellaba pattern was very easy to follow with only a
few pieces, most of them simple rectangular shapes.
I was able to cut and sew the outfit in 2 evenings,
probably 3 hours altogether (and I sew slowly!).
I had no problems following the patterns. I
went my own way with some of the finishing because I
intend this outfit as a bathrobe or dress-up and was
not especially concerned with how it looks on the
inside.
Especially neat is a brochure inside the pattern
detailing the "Little Folks" handwork for each
outfit. The Moroccan Djellaba traditionally
has pom-poms and chain stitching. Their pom-pom
instructions said to wrap yarn around cardboard
'doughnuts' but I thought they would be too
labor-intensive and easy to destroy, so I opted to
buy some medium sized acrylic pom-poms from a craft
store. I sewed them onto the outfit where the
pattern indicated in a diagram and also following
the color scheme detailed in the diagram. It
was just my luck that I found pom-pooms that exactly
matched the hues in the fabric. I am hoping
that once Isaac is old enough to fit easily into the
Djellaba he will not be intent on chewing on the
pom-poms because they could be a choking hazard if
they came off. I tried to sew them on as
securely as possible (and then some!). The
chain stitching was done with 3 ply dark gold
embroidery thread along nearly every seam line and
it looks beautiful.
I am
very pleased with how the Moroccan Djellaba turned
out. It looks adorable and will make a
wonderful bathrobe for Isaac in a few months.
The outfit itself was quick and easy to sew but the
handwork was what took the most time to complete,
hands down. Even so, it did not take much
effort and the results are adorable."

I claim
Kristen (and Isaac) as adopted family - she was a
joy to teach to sew as a graduate student! She
caught on very quickly - and sewing has given her a
new 'thing' to enjoy. Londa |
