FREE Pattern/Directions:  Londa's 3 Tiered Skirt

Since the "Bohemian" Tiered skirts are all the rage, I went digging into my class files (from fabric shop days) and found a pattern I had developed for a simple 3 Tiered Skirt.  This 'recipe' will work for ANY SIZE - including little girls, too!  (That's the Grandma in me talking!) I really feel that 5 tiers is even more attractive, but you can easily adapt this 'recipe' and technique from 3 to 5 tiers.  The picture shown is of my own newest garment - whipped up for Easter Sunday.  I used L.J's Ultimate Broomstick Skirt (one of my all-time favorite patterns), but actually, with my directions, you can create one very much like it.  I love this (current) rose Pink Floral Cotton Voile Print.  It is fairly sheer, but I just used one more length of fabric for a 'lining' tube underneath and it is just fine.  Accenting the tiers is the Bias Cut Silk Ribbon that I love.  I dyed it with the ColorHue Dyes ( using mayonnaise and pickle jars at my kitchen sink!) and easily rotary-cut the 1 3/4" ribbon into narrower strips.   Chatting with Maggie Backman at http://www.silkthings.com about my order, I dug into her great website and found lots of great info on Colorhue Dyes - you should check it out:  Understanding Colorhue Dyes , How Colorhue Silk Dye is Different,  and What Types of Fabrics Work Best with ColorHue

In my 3 Tier Skirt directions, you'll also find how I construct it using a serger to gather quick and easy, and even how I mark quarter points to match gathering to so the marking can NOT get lost!  Be sure to go here and print off the directions.  Current fabrics I carry that would make good skirts:

Oh...my directions also give you a chart for figuring yardage needed if you want to mix fabrics in the tiers - LOTS of creative fun!

Fajita Skirt:  Thumbs Up!
f I LOVE Lyla's' Fajita Skirt!  I just wrote my Londa's 2 Cents Worth on it and sent it out to my Fashion Club Members yesterday.  It comes FREE with your purchase of the pattern, too.  This skirt is great for all figures - and looks good with strappy sandals for summer and boots for winter!  Though it calls for knits, I made it of a woven, and just inserted a zipper - which I tell all about in my Londa's 2 Cents Worth.  Whimsy Rayon Print would make a great Fajita - destined to stay in your wardrobe all year 'round.
Londa 'Sees' .... Fabric/Pattern Suggestions
The great Cotton/Lycra fabrics currently in my collection just beg to become one of 3 garments in my mind:
  • A-Line Skirt - like LaFred's Iris Skirt
  • Little Jeans-styled jacket  - like Louise Cutting's By Popular Demand (see picture at right) - remember, even though it's getting warm, if you're like me, you often FREEZE in air conditioning - even at the grocery store!
  • Simple chemise - especially the returned Empire silhouette

Suggested Fabrics

NEW!  White Cotton/Lycra Sateen - how about topstitching/embroidering with the new Clover Variegated Threads?  Wild Pink Retro - if you're wild about color.  Enchanted Tulips - another beauty that would stay in  your wardrobe all year - goes great with your basic black. Green Geometric - again, has black in it to coordinate with your black pants and skirts! Navy Taupe Black Mint Floral - this one would work with jeans AND black bottoms.  Strolling Street - don't you love my 'names' of fabrics?  This one has black in it too - and just a plain, classy print!  I loved it so much, when the first bolt disappeared, I just had to get it in again. Brown Floral Reversible Cotton/Linen - play the 2 sides of this together in a jacket - perhaps reversing for the front band, collar and cuffs.  Floral Brocade - absolutely elegant! Olive Aqua Jacquard - and use the Antique Chinese Coins I carry on it for unique closures.  See my Creative Sweatshirt Jacket  ( scroll way to the bottom jacket) where I teamed this fabric and the coins!

Martha Pullen's Arlington Sewing Market ...

                                         Here I Come!

m June 1 - 3  will find me in Arlington, Texas at the Martha Pullen Sewing Market.  I'm looking forward to teaching several sessions on my Creative Sweatshirt Jackets.  This is my first Martha Pullen 'event' in years, but several of my new internet sewing friends have urged me to attend as a vendor.  I even pursuaded my handsome hubby to come along ...with the cargo Van we're renting to bring lots of 'good sewing stuff'!  I'm already starting to order, measure, pack wonderful products.  This will be the beginning of yet another website for my 'family' - I think I'll call it  Londa's Artsy Sewing Stuff.  Watch for 'birth' announcements later this summer. Click on the link below for the full brochure on Martha's Arlington Market.

Treasure Found In:

                            Jackets For Real People

When reading through this new book - page by page and word for word, I was thrilled to find the secret to how you can maneuver that 'funny little corner where the lining jump hem connects to the front facing' while you 'BAG' the lining.  In other words, how to do that corner AND insert the lining totally by machine!  This 'how-to' comes from an Australian Teacher - and, for me, makes that alone worth the price of the book!
